DIOR Sunglasses: Luxury and Protection with Style
What defines the brand and why choose it
In nearly eighty years of history, DIOR has had eight creative directors. Each has reinterpreted the same question that Christian Dior formulated on 12 February 1947: what does it mean to be an elegant woman at this moment in the world? Yves Saint Laurent answered it at 21 with the 1958 Trapèze. Marc Bohan answered it for 29 years with a discreet elegance that broadened the catalogue without betraying the heritage. Gianfranco Ferré answered it with Italian architectural precision and the Lady Dior bag — initially called Chouchou, renamed in honour of Princess Diana when presented to her in 1995. John Galliano answered it with the most theatrical spectacle fashion had ever seen. Raf Simons answered it with the most admired modernist clarity of his generation. Maria Grazia Chiuri (2016–2025) answered it as the first woman ever to creatively direct DIOR, with feminism as her axis and the We Should All Be Feminists T-shirt as a fashion object transcending the season. And since June 2025, Jonathan Anderson — who already transformed Loewe into one of the most influential names in contemporary luxury — assumes simultaneous direction of womenswear, menswear and Haute Couture: the first to do so since the founder himself.
DIOR sunglasses have been produced since 2021 with Thélios — the LVMH-Marcolin joint venture, also responsible for Celine, Bvlgari, Loewe and Givenchy eyewear — at the Manifattura in Longarone, Italy. Before that, for 23 years (1997–2020), eyewear was produced under licence by Safilo. The switch to Thélios allowed the eyewear to be integrated directly into the maison's creative process for the first time. The identity elements defining DIOR eyewear are the same as those defining the house since 1947: the interlocked CD monogram on the temples, the Cannage motif — the diamond grid from the Napoleon III chairs decorating the first show at 30 Avenue Montaigne — and the silhouettes translating the couture vocabulary into eyewear format.
Styles and uses: the DIOR sun collections
The DiorSignature is the most popular and influential collection: the gold CD logo on the temples as sole signature element, in butterfly (B1U, B5I), cat-eye and oval silhouettes. The DiorSignature B1U — oversized butterfly in acetate with gold CD on the temple — was the most photographed luxury eyewear model on social media in the 2022–2024 seasons, worn by Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Rihanna and hundreds of influencers globally. It best embodies the balance between the house's couture heritage and the product's visual accessibility.
The CD Diamond is the most heritage-loaded proposal: the diamond motif in relief — derived directly from the 1947 Cannage — worked on the temples and rings as a three-dimensional raised element. The CD Diamond S2I (square) and CD Diamond R2I (oval) are the most jewellery-like references in the collection. The DiorBlackSuit is the most minimalist and masculine proposal — equally popular in the women's market: rectangulars in metal or acetate, clean profiles, DIOR logo on the temple in differential tone. The DiorBlackSuit S21 became the editorial reference model, worn by LaKeith Stanfield, Paul W. Downs and Dominic Fike at the same 2025 DIOR show. The DiorMidnight is the most architecturally complex proposal: geometric, metallic, with the CD Diamond motif integrated into the frame structure — the highest aesthetic declaration in the collection and the closest to the Haute Couture vocabulary.
Practical details: Cannage, CD and Italian manufacturing
DIOR sunglasses are manufactured in Italy at the Thélios Manifattura in Longarone, the same production centre that develops the collections of the main LVMH maisons. Materials include first-quality cellulose acetate with artisanal finishing treatment and gold alloy metal for CD Diamond and DiorMidnight line models. The Cannage motif in relief is produced through a three-dimensional engraving process on the acetate or metal surface — the same diamond pattern appearing on the exterior of the Lady Dior bag, the chairs of the maison's first salon and the upholstery decorating Dior boutique interiors worldwide. The CD on the temples is worked gold metal with high-precision insertion or silk-screen process. UV 400 protection in solid, gradient and mirror lenses across the maison's chromatic palette: black, gold, nude, pink, navy and the gemstone tones defining the Dior universe.
