Spanish Craftsmanship, Irish Imagination: LOEWE Sunglasses

What defines the brand and why choose it

Few luxury houses can trace an unbroken line from 1846 to the present while maintaining artisanal leather as the irreducible core of their identity. LOEWE is one of them. Founded in Madrid as a craftsmen's collective, renamed in 1872 by German master Enrique LOEWE Roessberg and official supplier to the Spanish Crown since 1905, the house arrived at the LVMH group with a heritage that few competitors could match in historical depth and technical leather mastery.

What Jonathan Anderson did between 2013 and 2025 was take that heritage and turn it into the most influential visual language in contemporary luxury: the Puzzle bag as a design object elevated to cultural icon status, the LOEWE Craft Prize launched in 2016 as the world's greatest recognition of contemporary craftsmanship, runway shows as experiences that fused fashion, art and conceptualism with a lightness no other luxury house could imitate. LOEWE was named the world's hottest brand in Q2 2023 and again in Q2 2024 according to the Lyst Index. In April 2025, Jack McCollough and Lázaro Hernández of Proenza Schouler assumed creative direction. LOEWE sunglasses arrived in 2018 with the house's first eyewear collection, produced by Thélios — LVMH's reference eyewear manufacturer, also responsible for Celine, Dior and Givenchy collections — and manufactured in Italy.

Styles and uses

The LOEWE sunglasses collection is organised around three clearly differentiated universes. The Anagram universe is the main collection line, built around the house anagram — the four interlocked letters that Anderson reformulated as the visual identity seal in 2014. Anagram models offer geometric silhouettes in high-quality acetate: volumetric squares, cat-eye with the gold anagram on the temple, metal hexagonals with the interlocked motif. The Screen LW40036I — cat-eye from the Anagram universe — is a homage to the world of cinema with the anagram engraved on the outer temple. The Paula's Ibiza universe is the collection's most free-spirited and recognisable line. Inspired by the Paula's boutique that Armin Heinemann opened in Ibiza in the 1970s — a meeting point of Mediterranean counterculture —, this line incorporates the most iconic element of all LOEWE eyewear: the Inflated frames. The inflated silhouette — generous-volume acetate or injected nylon wrapping the lens like a mask from another time — does not exist in any other luxury market collection. The Wave Mask and Dive In Mask are the most sought-after models: mask silhouettes with continuous curvature, gold anagram on temple, in black, tortoise, cobalt blue and the vibrant Mediterranean colours of the capsule collection.

Practical details: acetate, manufacturing and lenses

LOEWE sunglasses are manufactured in Italy by Thélios, LVMH's eyewear manufacturer, to the same production standards as the group's major houses. Main materials: first-quality cellulose acetate in Anagram and Paula's Ibiza line models, high-resistance injected nylon in the higher-volume Inflated models, and light alloy metal in the more refined models. The LOEWE anagram appears on the outer temple in gold or silver metal in most models — the only explicit signature element in a design that could otherwise be read as purely formal. UV 400 protection in solid, gradient and mirror lenses across grey, brown, green, blue and gold mirror.

The LOEWE Craft Prize and the culture of making

One context essential for understanding LOEWE sunglasses is the LOEWE Craft Prize, launched in 2016 as the most important international recognition of contemporary craftsmanship. It is not a coincidence that the eyewear launched precisely when the house was investing most deeply in establishing craft — understood not as nostalgia but as the most advanced form of human intelligence applied to material — as its core cultural identity.

The Paula's Ibiza line is the clearest expression of this duality between craft seriousness and playful freedom: the injected nylon of the Inflated frames is not chosen because it is cheap but because it is the material that best achieves the impossible volume of the inflated silhouette, the same logic by which the house's leather craftsmen choose the material that best solves the formal problem they face. Function and imagination as inseparable partners — exactly what the Craft Prize celebrates every year.
